Todo os anos, recebo centenas de discos para o meu programa diário «Jazz a Dois» (Antena 2), do qual já escrevi mais de 700 episódios.

 

Após algum tempo, a rotina instala-se e cada novo CD torna-se apenas mais um, caindo na categoria de “disco suficientemente bom para divulgar, mas não necessariamente extraordinário ou suficientemente diferente para voltar a ouvir”. E, depois, de vez em quando, há um ou outro álbum que se destaca e que desperta realmente a minha atenção. Foi precisamente o que sucedeu com Once Upon a Time in Portugal, de Michael Lauren.

 

No momento em que o novo mainstream ameaça não ser mais do que um beco sem saída, Michael Lauren recoloca as coisas no seu devido lugar, providenciando um registo pleno de swing, de paixão e de dinâmicas. Podem chamar-lhe simplesmente jazz, porque de Nova Iorque a Hong-Kong é precisamente assim que vai ser descodificado. O facto de o disco ter sido gravado em Lisboa, capital do fado, por notáveis músicos portugueses, prova que o jazz é, actualmente, tão americano quanto europeu ou até asiático. Basta que mantenha a sua idiossincrasia norte-americana.

After some time, the routine makes its way and each new CD is hardly noticed, falling into the category of “one more good enough to play but not necessarily outstanding or different enough to keep at hand”. And then sometimes, an album that really stands out from the crowd strikes my attention. That is precisely what happened with Michael Lauren’s record Once Upon a Time in Portugal. 

 

When the new mainstream threatens to be no more than a dead-end alley, Michael takes it back to where it belongs, providing swing, passion, and dynamics. You can simply call it jazz and be understood by what you mean from New York to Hong-Kong. The fact that is was made in Lisbon, the capital city of fado, with some fine Portuguese musicians, is a statement on how jazz nowadays is as American as European or even Asian, providing it keeps its U.S. idiosyncrasy".
